Fun Fact: At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC, stands the home of every President of the United States since John Adams moved in at the end of his term in 1800. Since it was first constructed, it was expanded many times by many different Presidents. The first to make modifications to the White House was Thomas Jefferson who added two colonnades which were meant to conceal stables and storage. After the building was partially burned during the War of 1812, reconstruction began almost immediately, and James Monroe moved in promptly afterwards. Theodore Roosevelt, due to overcrowding, had all of the work offices moved into the newly constructed West Wing, and William Howard Taft was responsible for the construction of the first Oval Office.
Since the time of John Adams, the White House had always been open to the public, and until Grover Cleveland’s Presidency, citizens would follow the President home to celebrate his victory after an election. This practice continued even after 20,000 jubilant supporters filled the White House after the election of Andrew Jackson, forcing the newly elected President to spend his first night in office in a hotel. Visitation was closed down after September 11 2001, and remains closed to the general public.
