Fun Fact: Over the years there have been eight naval vessels bearing that name in the US Navy. The Enterprise, or Big E, still in commission today was the first nuclear-powered naval vessel in the world and is the only ship in her class. Surpassed only by the USS Constitution in years of service, the Enterprise will have been in operation for over 50 years by the time of her retirement.
Over the years, the Enterprise has been a versatile vessel. After her maiden voyage, she was used as a tracking station for the flight of Friendship 7, the capsule in which Lieutenant Colonel John Glenn made the first US orbital spaceflight. During the Cuban Missile Crisis she was used as a blockade ship. The Enterprise has also been involved in the Vietnam and Korean wars, as well as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. One more voyage is planned for the Enterprise before her retirement, at which point, she will be the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be decommissioned by the US Navy.
